Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Episode 1 serves as a critical introduction to the long-awaited Hidden Inventory arc. As the first episode of the season, it sets the tone for future episodes and dives into the backstory of the main characters.
The main highlight of this episode is seeing the conflicting ideologies of Gojo and Geto. Their intense argument, which focuses on the role of the strong in protecting the weak, is a refreshing dynamic. This challenges the audience's preconceived notions, as Gojo is usually portrayed as a hero and protector, while Geto is an opponent of Jujutsu wizards.
- Masamichi Yaga, their teacher, reprimands Satoru for exposing jujutsu to the general public when they return to school. Suguru responds that it's for their own safety but Satoru objects, saying he doesn't see why they must keep their powers a secret from the normal people. Their argument turns into a furious argument, but Yaga steps in and breaks up the fight.
- Then Yaga tells them that Master Tengen has given them a particular task. Riko Amanai, a young woman who is the Star Plasma Vessel, is to be escorted to Master Tengen's realm as part of the assignment.
With the release of its second season, Jujutsu Kaisen is back. The Season 2 opener sets the scene for yet another gripping adventure, with a wealth of exciting and intriguing episodes awaiting viewers. The first episode of the series, "Hidden Inventory," which delves into the past of one of the series' most fascinating and formidable characters, Satoru Gojo, premiered on July 6, 2023.
Additionally, the episode expertly sets up the characters and their friendship in a way that separates them from their futures. Through dialogue and voice acting, we are reminded that although these characters are familiar, they are not the versions we are used to.
While the episode succeeds in many areas, there are a few minor flaws. For some viewers, the extensive screen time devoted to Utahime and Mei Mei in the haunted house may not be necessary as it does little to advance the main story. However, this is a subjective observation that may vary from viewer to viewer.
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Episode 1 titled "Hidden Inventory" opens with an exciting mission as Mei Mei and Utahime are sent to investigate a haunted house. When the duo goes missing for longer than expected, Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto, both second-year students at Tokyo Jujutsu High School, are tasked with rescuing their missing companions.
The sophomore manages to break the cursed spirit barrier and free Mei and Utahime, but they don't get any unwanted media attention when Satoru forgets to cover his presence with a curtain. After returning to school, Satorua was reprimanded by their teacher, Masamichi Yaga, for bringing jujutsu to the public.
Satoru claims that he doesn't understand why they have to hide their abilities from ordinary people, while Suguru counters that it's for their own safety. Their differences escalate into a heated confrontation, but Yaga intervenes and stops them from fighting.
Yaga then informs them that Master Tengen has given them a special mission. The mission is to escort a girl named Riko Amanai, who is a Star Plasma Vessel, to master Tengen's territory.
- The Star Plasma Vessel is a rare specimen compatible with Master Tengen's cursed technology that forces him to switch bodies every 500 years.
- If Master Tengen fails to fuse with the Star Plasma Vessel, he will rise to a new state and become the enemy of mankind. His barrier techniques are essential to maintain balance and order in the jujutsu world. But Geth and Goyo aren't the only ones after the Star Plasma Vessel.
- Yaga explains that Riko is targeted by two groups: a group of abusers who want to kill her and influence the ritual of master Tengen; and the Time Ship Association, a sect that worships Master Tengen and wants to stop him from switching bodies.
When Satoru and Suguru arrive at Riko's, they find that has already begun an attack on her. Suguru manages to save Riko from a sniper bullet, while Satoru takes care of the soldiers with ease.
The episode ends with a member of the Time Vessel Association meeting Toji Fushiguro and offering the mercenary 30 million yen for Riko's body.
