Demon Slayer, also known as "Kimetsa no Yaiba", is an anime series based on a manga written by Koyoharu Gotouge. The anime adaptation follows the story of Tanjiro Kamado, a kind and hardworking boy who lives in the mountains with his family.
Episode 1 Summary: The episode begins with a young boy named Tanjiro Kamado who lives with his family in a remote mountainous region. Tanjiro is responsible for supporting his family by selling coal in a nearby village. One day he goes down the mountain to sell his coal, but decides to return early because of an approaching snowstorm.After loading the coal basket on his back, Tanjiro Kamado hears his mother calling him. She wipes soot from her face and tells him that she is worried for his safety because he was covered in snow during the sale. After that, he explains that he wants the whole family to eat well for the new year and is willing to sell as much coal as possible. Her younger brother and sister see her leaving and want to come with her; their mother won't allow it, because she walks much faster than they do. Confused, they both tell Tanjiro of their willingness to help him. He assures them both, Hanako and Shigeru, that he will look out for them when he returns.
He sees his other younger brother, Takeo, and tells him to cut firewood for them. Takeo is slightly annoyed that he can't join him, so Tanjiro pats his head soothingly, much to his dismay and the family's laughter. As he leaves, he meets his younger sister Nezuko carrying their youngest sibling Rokuta. He says that after his father's death, they all looked up to him as a role model. As he leaves, wishing him luck, Tanjiro mutters to himself about the family's living situation.
They have always made the most of their restless life because life can change suddenly like the weather. Arriving in a nearby town to begin selling his coal, Tanjiro hears several townspeople praising and thanking him for his past actions. Suddenly, he hears an injured young man calling, and the seller accuses him of breaking the plate. Using her keen sense of smell, she deduces that the cat has broken it to her relief. Another man calls him for help with the heavy package.
When the basket is empty and night falls, Tanjiro leaves for home, but an old neighbor who lives nearby stops him and warns him not to step on the mountain. Although Tanjiro claims to be safe because of his sense of smell, the man sternly tells him to stay in his house for the night as demons roam around at night. Brought to dinner, Tanjiro asks the man Saburo what demons are. He tells them that demons eat people and only work in the dark, so it is dangerous to go over the mountain now. Tanjiro has a futon to sleep on and asks if demons would enter houses, to which Saburo says yes. He then states that this is why the Demon Slayers are protecting them. Saburo, who lost his family to demons, feels sorry for Tanjiro and wants to bring his siblings to meet him next time to comfort him.
